White War Historical Society

Società Storica per la Guerra Bianca

"Per non dimenticare" (not to forget): so reads the essential but meaningful epigraph on the monument that, on the peak of the Mount Ortigara, reminds us the fights which took place during WWI on that bloody and bare mountain, situated at the northern edge of the plateau of Asiago.
For this reason ("Per non dimenticare") the "White War Historical Society", a non-profit registred cultural association, has been founded in Milan in January 1993. Its purpose is to keep alive the memory of that particular front of the WWI in which our Alps' peaks and snow (that's the origin of the name White War) played the main role. On this front the lines were often situated higher than 3,000 m. of altitude. Therefore the soldiers of both sides had to fight not only the enemy, but also the wheather and living conditions at the brink of impossibility.
The Society wants to be a reference for all those (researchers, museums, associations and other institutions) who deal with the various aspects related to the mountain war. The White War Historical Society encourages studies about this topic and organizes meetings, expositions and museums visits.
In addition it edits a yearly review "Aquile in Guerra" (Eagles in War) with the contributions of famous Italian and foreign members and external researchers. The review gathers articles on war episods, troops organization, uniforms, militaria, trachs, renovations, books, museal and associations activities with the free contributions of famous authors.
In a time characterised by its scarce historical memory, our associates want to make everybody remember the sacrifice of those who have fought, suffered and often died on our mountains during WWI: Italians, Austrians and Germans - with no distinction of nationality - united in bravery, suffering and hardship.
The subscription fee of 28 euro entitles to the yearly review, two newsletters, badge, postcards and further society publications. For any kind of information, please contact: Società Storica per la Guerra Bianca, via Giusti 5, 20089 Rozzano (MI).
